Ingredients
Scale
Burger Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon pickle relish
Burgers
- 20 ounces ground beef (90/10)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
- 8 slices American cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 leaves fresh lettuce
- 4 slices tomato
- 4 slices red onion
Instructions
- Make the burger sauce: Stir together the mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickle relish in a small bowl. Taste and adjust the ratio if desired to achieve your preferred flavor balance.
- Form the burger patties: Divide the ground beef into eight 3-ounce balls for double-stack burgers. Handle the meat gently to keep it loose. Season the outsides of the balls evenly with kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder if using.
- Press the patties in the skillet: Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Place each beef ball into the pan individually. Cover each ball with a piece of foil and press down firmly using a second small pan or skillet to flatten into thin patties approximately 1/8 inch thick.
- Cook the patties: Cook the patties for 2 minutes on one side until browned. Flip each patty, immediately top with a slice of American cheese, and cook another 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese melts and patties are cooked through. Avoid pressing down hard to retain juices.
- Assemble the burgers: Spread 1 to 2 tablespoons of the prepared burger sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Layer with a leaf of fresh lettuce, then stack two cheese-topped patties per bun for double-stacks. Top with a slice of tomato and red onion. Place the bun top over and serve immediately.
Notes
- For a single thicker patty, divide meat into four 5-ounce portions and adjust cooking time to 3 to 4 minutes per side.
- You can substitute the American cheese with cheddar or any melty cheese of your choice.
- Use fresh, sturdy buns like brioche or potato rolls for best texture.
- For extra flavor, you can add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef before forming patties.
- Ensure patties are thin and evenly pressed to achieve authentic double-stack burger texture.
