Ingredients
Scale
Base Layer
- 35-40 saltine crackers
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups light green candy melts (about 1 12-ounce bag)
- red heart sprinkles
- green sprinkles of choice
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 10 x 15-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Arrange Crackers: Place 35-40 saltine crackers in even rows on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire bottom surface. Set aside while preparing the toffee.
- Make Toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 1 cup unsalted butter with 1 cup packed brown sugar. Stir until the sugar completely dissolves and bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Continue boiling for 3 minutes or until the temperature reaches between 270-290 degrees Fahrenheit (soft crack stage).
- Pour Toffee: Immediately pour the hot toffee evenly over the arranged saltine crackers. Use a heat-safe spatula to spread the toffee to cover all crackers completely.
- Bake Toffee and Crackers: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes. This helps the toffee soak into the crackers and become crisp.
- Add Candy Melts: Remove the pan from the oven and evenly sprinkle 2 cups of light green candy melts over the hot toffee. Let the pan sit for 3 minutes to allow the candy melts to soften and melt.
- Spread Candy Coating: Using an offset spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the melted green candy melts evenly over the toffee layer for a smooth coating.
- Decorate and Cool: While the candy coating is still soft, sprinkle red heart sprinkles and green sprinkles of your choice evenly over the top. Allow the Christmas Crack to cool completely at room temperature until hardened.
- Serve: Once fully hardened, break the Christmas Crack into pieces and serve or package for gifting.
Notes
- Store at room temperature in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to 7 days.
- Refrigerate in an airtight container to extend freshness up to 2 weeks.
- Freeze leftover pieces in a freezer bag or airtight container layered with parchment paper to prevent sticking, for up to 3 months.
- Use a candy thermometer to ensure the toffee reaches the correct temperature for a perfect texture.
- Substitute candy melts with white chocolate colored with green food coloring if preferred.
