Description

A classic American side dish featuring tender green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with sharp cheddar cheese and crispy fried onion strings for a delightful texture contrast.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces

Cream Sauce

  • 10.5 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Toppings

  • 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onion strings, divided
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat a 3-quart casserole dish with non-stick spray and set aside.
  2. Cook Green Beans: Place the green beans in a pot of lightly salted boiling water and cook until fork tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Make Sauce: In the casserole dish, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked green beans, 2/3 cup of the crispy fried onion strings, and all of the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce. Stir gently until the green beans are evenly coated.
  5. Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 30 minutes until the center is bubbly and heated through.
  6. Add Final Topping: Remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining fried onion strings evenly over the top, then return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to crisp the topping.
  7. Serve Immediately: Remove from the oven and serve the casserole right away for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • For a creamier casserole, substitute half-and-half for the milk.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking; bake for an additional 5 minutes if baking cold.
  • Use fresh green beans for optimal texture; frozen can be used but drain thoroughly before mixing.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free crispy onion strings and cream of mushroom soup.
  • To add extra flavor, sprinkle some paprika or fresh herbs before baking.
